In this video, we’re going to talk about rBGH.

What is rBGH in dairy products?

rBGH (also called rBST) stands for recombinant bovine growth hormone. This is a synthetic hormone that mimics a hormone that the pituitary produces. Normally, this is released by the pituitary in small quantities.

Dairy farmers use this hormone to increase milk production and growth.

In young calves, this hormone acts as a growth hormone. During lactation, it increases milk production.

rBGH is approved by the FDA in the US. However, it is not permitted in the European Union, Canada, and many other countries.

Monsanto is one of the companies that developed rBGH—surprising, right?

What is the problem with rBGH? Take a look:

• Cows that are treated with this hormone have a 50% increased risk of lameness (abnormal stance or gait, problems with their hooves, and other issues)

• 25% increased frequency of getting udder infections (mastitis)

• Increased risk of infertility, ovarian cysts, birth defects, and use of antibiotics.

If you’re consuming dairy, make sure you’re only buying organic dairy products. Not only do orange products not contain rBGH, but they also don’t contain other synthetic hormones that could be potentially harmful.
