Calcium is vital for your immune system. Calcium allows your white blood cells to get fuel. The ability of your white blood cells to multiply is also dependent on calcium.

Calcium is an essential signaling molecule in the communication process within your immune system and your cells. Your neutrophils, which make up the great majority of your white blood cells, are dependent on calcium as well. Calcium is also anti-fever because it supports the immune system.

Low vitamin D is the number one cause of hypocalcemia. Vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium. Vitamin D by itself is vital for the immune system.

Causes of hypocalcemia (low calcium in the blood):
1. Low vitamin D
2. Alkalosis
3. Low magnesium
4. Liver or kidney disease

Hypocalcemia is a common finding in viral infections, but there are quite a few other symptoms of hypocalcemia you could experience that aren’t related to the immune system, such as:
• Chronic cough
• Wheezing
• Difficulty swallowing
• Night cramps
• Charlie horse
• Restless legs syndrome
• Bruising
• Tetany
• Numbness around the lips, tongue, fingertips, or toes
• Insomnia
• Menstrual cramps
• Brittle nails
• Dry skin
• Itchy skin
• Coarse hair
